Opposition leaders have condemned what they describe as “orchestrated attacks,” calling for swift investigations into the chaos that disrupted Governor George Natembeya’s rally in Kabuchai.
With less than 96 hours before polling, a 70-year-old man has died following injuries sustained during a stampede that broke out amid heightened political confrontations in the Chwele–Kabuchai Ward race.
Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed that the victim succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Gunfire was reported as rival groups clashed, leaving behind a trail of destruction and families counting losses. Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga was among those affected, assessing the damage to his home after sections were vandalized.
The MP accused political rivals of orchestrating the attack and urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to take immediate action. He estimated the destroyed property to be worth about three million shillings and vowed not to be intimidated.
Several damaged vehicles linked to the incident have been taken to the local police station as investigations continue.
The violence has drawn condemnation from opposition leaders, with Governor George Natembeya telling supporters that the events in Kabuchai would only strengthen the community’s resolve. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi also warned the government against using force to suppress opposition leaders, saying the current generation would not tolerate electoral malpractice.
In Machakos County, tensions surrounding the forthcoming Mumbuni North Ward by-election remain high following the assault of John Wambua Musau during a campaign event.
Musau is currently receiving treatment at Machakos Level 5 Hospital. Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has called for authorities to ensure peaceful conduct throughout the campaigns.
