Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru is determined to upgrade their second-place finish to a crowning moment in the Kenya Cup as the new season kicks off next month.

Oilers finished behind Kabras Sugar after losing 27-26 in the playoffs final, but Weru believes his side has learned enough from past setbacks to finally turn the tide against the sugarmen.

Besides finishing runner up in the playoff and third behind Kabras and KCB in the regular league standings, Oilers won Impala Floodies title in November 2024.

“We are ready for the season and we have prepared well. The good thing about this season is that unlike the previous one we have maintained the better part of the squad and that will make us competitive,” said Weru.

Weru added that he was impressed by the way the young players had blended well with the experienced ones and that has brought healthy competition in the team.

“Their will to learn from the experienced one has been amazing that has brought in a good blend in the team hence healthy competition,” added Weru.

As they gear up for the new season the veteran tactician knows they expect tough competition from defending champions Kabras RFC who have won the title the last four seasons and KCB RFC who have won the title eight times.

“The two are the main competitors but we can't rule out Nondies and Kenya Harlequins. They have a very good team but we will take one game at a time.”
