Harambee Stars secured a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Burundi in their penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier at the Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura on Thursday  evening.

Despite being out of contention for a World Cup slot, the result was a timely confidence lift for Benni McCarthy’s men, who are gradually building towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host.

The match began in dramatic fashion when goalkeeper Brian Bwire was forced off after only one minute following a dangerous challenge from Burundi’s forward Caleb Bimenyimana.

The referee initially hesitated but eventually sent off the Burundian striker, leaving the hosts to play with ten men for nearly the entire contest. Byrne Omondi replaced the injured Bwire between the posts.

Kenya, who started with recalled midfielder Austine Odhiambo and captain Michael Olunga leading the line, struggled to make their numerical advantage count in the first half.

Burundi, led by the lively Jean Claude Girumugisha, looked the more threatening side and constantly tested the Kenyan defense with swift counterattacks.

After the break, McCarthy made tactical changes, bringing on Timothy Ouma for Vincent Harper to add more creativity.

Duke Abuya came close to opening the scoring with a deflected effort that was palmed away by Burundi goalkeeper Nahimana.

The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute when substitute Ryan Ogam — continuing his fine run of form — fired home shortly after coming on to give Kenya the lead thanks to Captain Michael Olunga's assist.

Burundi pushed hard for an equaliser late in the game, but the Kenyan backline, stood firm to preserve the win.

The victory marked Kenya’s second in the qualifiers and a sign of steady progress under McCarthy, who has emphasized building squad depth and instilling a competitive mentality.

Harambee Stars will wrap up their qualifying campaign against Ivory Coast on Tuesday, October 14 ,before turning their full attention to preparations for the 2027 AFCON on home soil.
