FKF’s National Teams Coordinator Athanus Obala has lauded the federation for its renewed commitment to honouring international FIFA windows, a move he says is crucial in strengthening the Harambee Stars ahead of AFCON 2027, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Speaking from Antalya, Turkey, where Kenya faces Equatorial Guinea in a friendly match on Friday at 6:00 PM, Obala confirmed that all players, including foreign-based stars, had joined the camp and that head coach Benny McCarthy arrived on Wednesday evening.
“Operations are very good. Everybody is in camp, and the team is in good shape. I have to appreciate the Federation for arranging these matches because previously, we were not always able to honour international windows,” said Obala.
He emphasized that consistent participation in FIFA-sanctioned friendlies offers vital exposure and experience, particularly for emerging talents being integrated into the national setup.
“It is very good for the new players picked to get that experience,” he added.
Obala also hailed the facilities in Turkey, where the team is camped, noting that they provide a professional environment conducive to preparation.
“We are being hosted in marvellous facilities here in Turkey — something that tells you how different things are in Europe. The facilities are just fantastic,” he remarked.
The match against Equatorial Guinea marks Kenya’s first of two friendlies during this window, with a high-profile clash against Senegal set to follow next Tuesday.
Obala said these games are key in helping the technical bench assess the squad’s depth, chemistry, and tactical balance as they build towards 2027.
“This is a very important fixture for us. The coaches will have time to gauge the new players and assess the current squad. I foresee a very competitive national team in the future, where every player will have to prove their worth to wear the national colours,” he noted.
Kenya will be seeking to build momentum from recent encouraging performances as McCarthy continues shaping his vision for a strong and united Harambee Stars side ready to compete at the continental stage.
