Nyamira: Probe on after elderly couple killed inside homestead

Police in Nyamira are investigating the gruesome killing of an elderly couple who were attacked by unknown people on Saturday evening.

According to neighbours, the two were discovered at their house after heavy evening rain, bearing deep cuts that later proved fatal.

On Sunday, residents of Enchoro village gathered at the home of 83-year-old Jacob Ragera, who died on Saturday after a gruesome attack.

Rigera and his wife had deep cuts on their bodies, with neighbours saying they suspect the two had been attacked while the rains pounded the area at around 6pm on Saturday

The family says they were not aware of any feud between the couple, and outsiders are raising questions about the motive for the killing.

“Na hao walikuwa wasee wagonjwa na walikuwa wanaishi peke yao. Watoto wao wote wako nje. Sasa huyu mtu alitumia mufua akaingia wakati ananyesa ndio aka sijui kama ni mmoja au walikuwa wengi. Lakini kitendo kimetendeka cha mauaji,” said Peterson Onchaga, the deceased’s brother.

“Ni wazazi wameteseka wakati mwingi tunadai serikali itudaidie hao watu wawili wenye walavawaviamia walikwuwa wnaatka nini ndjo wazazi wetu wapate haki,” added Naomi Kerubo, a daughter of the deceased.

The family says nothing was stolen, while saying the two had no disagreements with any family members or neighbours, further deepening the mystery of the gruesome killing

Nyamira West deputy county commissioner Florence Obunga says investigations are underway. The two bodies have been moved to the Nyamira County morgue.
