After edging out Naivas FC 1–0 at the Mbaraki Sports Ground in Mombasa on Wednesday, Mombasa United are now gearing up for another big test as they travel to Bungoma to face Nzoia Sugar in Round Six of the National Super League (NSL).

The coastal side, who are the only representatives from Mombasa in the second-tier league, have played five matches so far — winning four and losing once, away to 3K FC last weekend.

Head coach Gilbert Selebwa praised his players’ resilience despite a demanding schedule that has seen them play multiple matches in quick succession.

“We are heading to Sudi Stadium to take on Nzoia, but I believe with proper strategy and planning we can come out with better results,” said Selebwa.

The coach admitted that fatigue remains a concern for his team, who have endured long road trips from Embu to Mombasa and now to Bungoma.

“I’m afraid of fatigue in my squad. We’ve been on the road for many hours to and from Embu, and now we have just a day to rest before an 18-hour trip to Sudi. But we will plan and prepare the same way we did for Naivas — and hope for the best,” he added.

Despite the tight schedule, Selebwa is confident his side can maintain their winning momentum.

“We had crucial injuries earlier, but now I’m happy everyone is back and ready for selection,” he said.

“Our target this season is to collect over 70 points. We’re focusing on maximum points at home and about 15 points from away matches — and Nzoia is one stop where we’re going for all three.”

Mombasa United currently sit second on the NSL table with 12 points from five matches, while Nzoia Sugar are in seventh place with 7 points.

Meanwhile, Naivas FC head coach Elvis Ayani has urged his players to move on from their midweek loss to Mombasa United and shift focus to their next assignment against Kabati Youth this weekend.

Ayani attributed the defeat not to being outplayed, but to his side’s failure to convert scoring chances.

“It was our first loss of the season and a wake-up call,” Ayani said.

“We didn’t lose because Mombasa United were better — we lost because we didn’t take our chances. In football, you must accept three results: win, loss, or draw. We now focus on bouncing back against Kabati.”

Naivas FC currently occupy third place in the NSL standings with 10 points from five matches in the 2025–2026 season.
