The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) has awarded the Malkia Strikers—a powerhouse of Kenyan women’s volleyball—the 4th IOC Scholarship Team Grant worth USD 50,000 (Ksh.6.4 million) to fuel their high-performance journey to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The announcement was made at Nyayo National Stadium during a press conference attended by NOCK representatives, Kenya Volleyball Federation President Charles Nyaberi, the Strikers, and their coaching staff.

The grant will cover elite advanced training, international exposure, technical and coaching support, and athlete welfare over the next three years.

The Strikers, currently Africa’s top-ranked team and 19th in the world, are targeting a third consecutive Olympics qualification, and a semi-final or podium finish to build on their previous Olympic appearances.

“The support will allow us to analyze past Olympic performances and address gaps so that we not only participate but compete for the semifinals and beyond,” said NOCK Secretary General John Ogola.

The Kenya Volleyball Federation plans to launch monthly training sessions immediately, balancing them with league games and international tournaments.

Kenya will also host the African Cup of Nations from August 23 to September 2, providing the 50 qualification points needed for Olympic participation.

KVF President Nyaberi expressed excitement over the sponsorship: “This comes at the perfect time as we prepare for the Cup of Nations. Our goal is clear—use this support to secure LA 2028 qualification and challenge for the podium.”

With careful planning, strategic exposure, and now financial backing, the Malkia Strikers are primed to make Africa—and Kenya—proud on the world stage.
