A new solar microgrid installed at Don Bosco Korr in Marsabit County is set to transform access to healthcare and education in one of Kenya’s most remote communities.

The containerized Villaya system, donated by Schneider Electric, will supply at least 10 kilowatt-peak of clean electricity to power the health centre, classrooms, and computer training facilities.

For years, Korr has struggled with unreliable or non-existent electricity, limiting essential services and slowing community development.

Speaking during the handover, Schneider Electric East Africa Country President Ifeanyi Odoh said the installation is intended to close deep energy gaps in marginalised regions.

“The Villaya solution not only meets immediate energy needs but also lays the foundation for long-term growth, improved healthcare, and enhanced education,” said Odoh.

The system integrates solar generation, energy storage, and smart load management in a portable container—an approach that allows it to operate off-grid and withstand the tough conditions of northern Kenya.

Ayush Gupta, the company’s Access to Energy Business Director, described it as purposely built for remote communities.

“Villaya is designed with flexibility and resilience at its core… providing 24/7 clean energy even in harsh environments,” he said.

For Don Bosco Korr, the benefits will be felt almost immediately. The health centre will be able to run medical equipment reliably, keep vaccines cold, and offer nighttime services.

Classrooms and the computer lab will also have consistent lighting and power, improving learning for primary, secondary, and technical students.

Rector Fr. Eric Owuor welcomed the installation as a turning point for the community.

“This solar microgrid is a game-changer. It ensures our health centre can operate effectively and our students can learn in well-lit classrooms,” he said.

The new solar system marks a significant step in expanding energy access in Marsabit, strengthening both health outcomes and educational opportunities.
