Steep new US tariffs took effect Saturday on certain Canadian goods, as Washington and Ottawa failed to finalize a trade pact following negotiations that carried on until the eleventh hour.
The tariffs, set at 50-percent, were originally due to come into force on Wednesday before US President Donald Trump delayed their imposition for three days.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday he would match US tariffs "dollar for dollar," after refusing to accept Washington's conditions for a trade deal.
"Last-minute changes in the US proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal," Carney said in a statement.
