National women’s basketball champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) are gearing up for the FIBA Zone Five Club Championships, set for November 9–15, 2025, in Nairobi.
The regional
tournament will serve as a qualifier for the Women’s Basketball League Africa
(WBLA), which will be held later this year in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
KPA head coach
Anthony Ojukwu has expressed confidence in his team’s preparations, revealing
that training began on October 27.
“All my players
are in camp and training is going well. I’m glad the competition will be held
here at home - even though it’s in Nairobi and not Mombasa, it still feels like
home,” said Ojukwu.
The reigning
champions will represent Kenya alongside Zetech Sparks, last season’s Premier
League runners-up. KPA finished fourth in last year’s edition, while
compatriots Equity Hawks placed sixth. This year’s tournament will bring
together top clubs from across East and Central Africa, all battling for a
coveted spot in the prestigious WBLA.
“Our team is
strong, everyone is fit and focused. We’re ready to face any opponent. Playing
at home gives us extra motivation to perform well for our fans and sponsors,”
added Ojukwu.
The qualifiers
are expected to feature elite club sides from the East and Central African
region, all vying for a berth at the continental showpiece. Al Ahly Sporting
Club of Egypt are the defending champions of the 2024 FIBA Women’s Basketball
League Africa Zone 5 Qualifiers.
