Police in Transmara South, Narok County, have launched an investigation following the gruesome killing of a Grade 9 candidate who was found raped and hacked to death on Wednesday morning.

The student was murdered on her way to school to sit for her Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) exams. A multi-agency team is investigating the incident.

Residents were up in arms after the body of a 13-year-old Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) candidate, who has since been identified as Chelangat Cynthia Shikuku, was found lifeless.

She had been molested and hacked to death. Her body was thrown into a sugarcane plantation.

According to residents, the assailants are unknown. The incident sparked anger among locals. This was, however, not the first incident a person was found murdered in cold blood.

"Mtoto anachinjwa kama kuku in school uniform, aje sasa mbona hii imefanyika kwa huyu mtoto tuko na hasira mbaya sana," said Johana Kamilan, a resident of Transmara South.

Chelangat's aunt said, "Huyo mtoto hana ata Mama, alikuwa anategemewa na ndugu zake Tunataka haki."

The minor died about a kilometre from school, where she was meant to sit her day 3 exams.

The body of the deceased is currently lying at Lolgoria Level 5 Hospital as the search for her killers is underway.
