Members of the Nairobi City County Assembly allied to the broad-based government have distanced themselves from an ongoing push by a section of MCAs to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Led by Majority Leader Peter Imwatok, more than 70 ward representatives dismissed the planned motion as “unnecessary noise” that could destabilise the capital and disrupt its leadership.

The legislators said they were guided by the spirit of cooperation championed by Raila Odinga and William Ruto, insisting that stability in Nairobi must take precedence over political contests.

“As members of the broad-based government in the capital city and the County Assembly of Nairobi, and in the spirit and guidance of Raila Amolo Odinga and President William Ruto, we firmly reject any attempt to create unnecessary noise, interfere with the leadership of the city or destabilise the prevailing tranquillity,” Imwatok said.

The MCAs argued that the impeachment drive is ill-timed, coming shortly after the Assembly approved a Ksh.80 billion cooperation agreement between the national government and Nairobi County. They maintained that the focus should remain on implementing the pact and accelerating development in the city

“Our priority remains the fulfilment of the aspirations of the broad-based government and the socio-economic advancement of Nairobi. We remain guided by the last clear instructions from Baba and his counterpart, His Excellency,” the Majority Leader added.

They emphasised that the city stands at a critical juncture, describing the cooperation framework with the President as a historic opportunity for transformation.

“We are unequivocally opposed to any attempt to impeach the governor at this critical time, particularly when the city is on the threshold of historic development under a cooperation agreement with His Excellency the President,” Imwatok said.

The Azimio-allied MCAs also urged colleagues championing the impeachment bid to abandon what they termed as political blackmail, noting that Governor Sakaja has demonstrated willingness to work collaboratively across political divides to advance inclusive governance in the capital.

“Governor Sakaja has on numerous occasions demonstrated goodwill and willingness to work collaboratively in advancing the Azimio dream and broad-based government inclusively, a prosperous and well-governed Nairobi. In that spirit, we shall fully support him to ensure stability and continued leadership for the well-being of our people,” they said.

On Tuesday, a separate faction of MCAs announced plans to initiate the governor’s removal from office.

The group, led by Deputy Minority Leader Waithera Chege and Baba Dogo MCA Godfrey Majiwa, claimed they had gathered sufficient signatures to table an impeachment motion.
