The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), in a joint operation with the National Police Service and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), has seized more than 50,000 litres of illicit alcohol in Kericho County.
The dawn
operation, conducted in Kaplelartet Location, Sigowet Division, targeted
illegal brewing dens suspected of producing and distributing illicit liquor in
the area.
According to
NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, the multi-agency team
confiscated and destroyed 50,000 litres of kangara, 100 litres of chang’aa,
and 1,000 litres of molasses used in the manufacture of the drinks.
Dr. Omerikwa
said the operation was part of the government’s Rapid Results Initiative (RRI)
against illicit alcohol, launched under the directive of Interior Cabinet
Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
“This is part
of a coordinated national effort to dismantle the networks behind the production
and sale of illegal alcohol,” he said.
He added that
the Authority is intensifying similar operations across the country,
particularly during the school holidays, to prevent exposure of young people to
substance abuse.
“Our children
are home, and we must ensure they are safe from the dangers of drugs and
alcohol,” he said, warning that enforcement teams will continue to monitor
hotspots and pursue offenders.
Authorities
described the Kericho raid as one of the most significant recent seizures in
the region, marking an escalation in efforts to curb the production and sale of
illicit brews.
