NACADA seizes over 27,000 litres of Illicit alcohol in Nairobi and Nyakach raids

The Authority said the raids, conducted in partnership with other government agencies, targeted the production, distribution and sale of illegal alcoholic drinks as part of intensified efforts to curb alcohol and drug abuse across the country.

During a Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) operation conducted on August 21 in Dagoretti North, Nairobi, NACADA enforcement officers recovered 2,130 litres of chang'aa and 120 drums of kangara containing an estimated 25,200 litres.

The officers also inspected several premises dealing in wines and spirits, where they recovered two bottles of spirits—DrawBite and Black Sambuca—that did not bear the required Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamps.

Two suspects were arrested during the operation and booked at Muthangari Police Station for alleged violations of alcohol control laws.

On August 22, NACADA officers extended the crackdown to North East Nyakach Location, where they targeted illicit alcohol production and distribution networks in an operation conducted jointly with the National Police Service, chiefs and village elders.

NACADA said the operations form part of the government's intensified nationwide crackdown following a presidential directive declaring drug and alcohol abuse a national development and security emergency.

Since December 2025, more than 2.8 million litres of illicit alcohol have been seized and over 970 suspects arrested in enforcement operations conducted across the country.

NACADA Director of Legal Services Leackey Illa, who spearheaded the operations, said the Authority would continue pursuing individuals and networks involved in the illicit alcohol trade.

“This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to dismantling the illicit alcohol trade and protecting public health,” Illa said.

NACADA has urged members of the public to support enforcement efforts by reporting illegal alcohol production and distribution activities to the relevant authorities.
