The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on Friday seized 4,000 litres of chang’aa during a dawn raid in Mukuru kwa Reuben and Mukuru kwa Njenga settlements, Nairobi.

The 3:00 a.m. operation, carried out jointly with the police, followed weeks of intelligence gathering on a suspected illicit distillery and distribution network. Officers targeted a cluster of rental structures believed to host the operations.

While the main distillery was found inactive, a search of nearby rooms led to the discovery of 14 sacks of chang’aa packed in nylon materials, packaging outlawed by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

No arrests were made, but the haul was transferred to Jogoo Road Police Station and is expected to undergo analysis at the Government Chemist as part of ongoing investigations.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Omerikwa, said the operation formed part of the government’s 100-day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) on illicit alcohol and drug abuse. He noted that the crackdown is aimed at disrupting supply chains and protecting vulnerable communities.
