Mwamba RFC chairman Edwin Waita says the club is entering a new era - one defined by renewed energy, deeper character, and a determined push to reclaim their place in the Kenya Cup.
Speaking to Citizen Digital just days before the
2025/26 KRU Championship kicks off, Waita said the club has reset its focus and
is ready to bounce back after last season’s painful relegation.
“We are a few
days to the kick-off of our season, and preparations are in high gear,” Waita
said. “Our main focus this season is to immediately bounce back from the
Championship into the Kenya Cup, where we belong.”
Mwamba’s
relegation last term ended a historic run in the top flight stretching back to
1999. Despite winning their final match against Blak Blad, Kulabu dropped on
head-to-head and point difference, bringing an emotional closer to a tough
season.
Now based at the
Goan Institute, the club is rebuilding with clear intent: revival with the aim
of restoring the team’s culture.
“First is to
bring back that rugby energy, culture, and psych. We've embarked on massive
grassroots recruitment targeting specific positions. We’ve also incorporated a
few tacticians who we believe will take us to the next level.”
Assessing the
team’s preseason preparations, which included a revealing run at the Impala
Floodlights tournament, Waita believes the squad is steadily sharpening.
“We started our preparations early.
Floodlights showed us a few concerns, and we’ve now worked on those areas and
installed the right personnel. It’s still a learning curve, but we are on the
right trajectory.”
Beyond
promotion, Waita says true success will be measured by the growth and maturity
of the club’s young talent, a cornerstone of Mwamba’s identity.
“My success is seeing these young men and
women grow in character and discipline. Mwamba Rugby is a family club. We aim
to produce wholesome individuals ready for challenges on and off the pitch.”
Kulabu has
retained most of last season’s roster, save for a few retirements and the exit
of Brian Ayimba, while integrating exciting young players such as Washington
Ogido, Paul Tati, and German Ochieng, who impressed in the National Sevens
Circuit and Floodlights.
With the new
season kicking off on November 22, Mwamba steps into the Championship with one
mission: fight back, rise again, and
return home to the Kenya Cup.
