Fresh from a hard-fought 1-0 away victory against MCF FC in their National Super League (NSL) season opener, Mombasa United are brimming with confidence as they prepare to host Fortune Sacco this Sunday at the Mbaraki Stadium.
Fidel Omondi netted the only goal of the match, securing a perfect start to the 2025–2026 NSL campaign for the coastal side.
Head coach Gilbert Selebwa, who celebrated his 60th birthday on Wednesday, welcomed the opening win, calling it a morale booster ahead of this weekend’s home clash.
"We're not just in Mombasa to make up the numbers—we're here to make an impact," said Selebwa.
"Starting with an away win sends a strong message. As I celebrate my 60th birthday, my biggest wish is to see Mombasa United earn promotion to the Kenya Premier League next season."
Last season, Mombasa United narrowly escaped relegation, finishing just above the drop zone. This year, they are determined to turn the tide and are optimistic about their new home ground—Mbaraki Stadium—being a game-changer.
Club CEO Nick Aruga expressed gratitude to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for approving their request to use Mbaraki Stadium.
"I'm thrilled that Mbaraki is now our official home ground. I thank KPA for supporting us. This move will boost our players’ morale and help us fight for maximum points at home,” said Aruga.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s opponents, Fortune Sacco, come into the match licking their wounds after a 1-0 home defeat to Naivas FC. They’ll be eager to bounce back and collect their first points of the season.
Mombasa United, backed by the Shahbal Foundation, has its sights set on promotion and hopes to join Bandari FC as the second coastal team in the Kenya Premier League.
Team Manager Gilbert Wesonga believes the team’s ambitions are well-placed under the guidance of veteran coach Selebwa.
“We have full faith in our head coach's experience. The team showed great character in the first match—winning away is never easy,” said Wesonga. “I call on all Mombasa residents to come out and support the team. Together, we can restore the glory of Mombasa United.”
