Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has called out Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for his controversial remarks concerning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, labelling them as shameful.

Governor Kahiga has been under fire over his remarks claiming that Raila's death was a form of divine intervention to politically rescue the Mount Kenya region.

The comments have been met with widespread criticism from the public, who termed them as disrespectful during a period of national mourning.

On his part, MP Mukunji stated that the governor must be held accountable for his words, pointing out that the remarks should not be used to vilify an entire community.

He urged political leaders to refrain from rhetoric that could incite ethnic tensions and undermine national cohesion.

Mukunji also noted that leaders who are genuinely mourning the former Prime Minister should instead be championing peace and unity, which he described as the true way to honour Raila Odinga’s legacy.

He reflected that Odinga’s political career was built on the pursuit of justice and holding governments to account, a commitment that continued even after he entered a political truce with President William Ruto.

Mukunji also warned that Governor Kahiga’s comments should not be attributed to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, asserting that such attempts are baseless.

Governor Kahiga sparked outrage on Tuesday at a burial ceremony in Nyeri, after he suggested that Odinga's death was God's plan to get the Mt Kenya region back to benefiting from State resources that had been diverted elsewhere.

In the short video that has gone viral on social media, Kahiga claimed that the political arrangement between President Ruto and the late Odinga had shifted government development priorities toward the Nyanza region.

"You guys can see, you can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us," Kahiga said in Kikuyu dialect.

"Because the plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, for you who do not travel because I was in that region, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans, because it seemed like they did away with us, but God came and brought this thing."

Kahiga's comments elicited public outrage, prompting the governor to apologise and resign as the Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors.
