After a flying start to their National Super League
(NSL) campaign, Mombasa United are brimming with confidence as they prepare to
face 3K FC in a crucial away fixture this Sunday in Embu.
The coastal outfit has been in red-hot form, winning
all three of their opening matches — beginning with an impressive away victory
against MCF FC, followed by dominant home performances over Fortune Sacco and
Luanda Villa FC.
Head coach Gilbert Selebwa admits Sunday’s clash
will be far from easy but insists his team is ready to give their all.
“It’s going to be a tough match. When you’re on top,
everyone wants to beat you,” said Selebwa. “No one expected us to start this
strong, but I’m proud of how the boys have handled themselves. We just need to
keep pushing.”
Selebwa revealed that the team had set an
early-season target of 15 points from their first five matches, and with nine
already secured, United are right on track.
“We’re happy with the progress. If we can achieve
our first target, we’ll set another for the next five games,” he added
confidently.
In a major boost for the leaders, defenders Austin
Nyagol and Ronald Okiyi have returned from injury, solidifying a backline that
had been hit hard in recent weeks.
“Almost the entire defense line was out, but having
Nyagol and Okiyi back is a huge relief. They’ll bring stability and confidence
to the squad,” said Selebwa.
Mombasa United currently sit top of the NSL standings with nine points from three matches, while 3K FC are eighth with four points.
