Mombasa United continued their impressive run in the 2025–2026 National Super League (NSL) with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Fortune Sacco at the Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa.

Despite being under pressure for long spells, the home side made their few chances count and showed great resilience to secure all three points.

Emmanuel Gabriel gave Mombasa United the perfect start in the 15th minute, unleashing a low drive from 20 yards that beat Fortune goalkeeper Manaseh Opunde.

Fortune almost found an equaliser eight minutes later when Elvin Barasa created space inside the box, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

As halftime approached, United were pegged back when defender Felix Ochieng inadvertently headed into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous Fortune corner.

United could have regained the lead moments later, but winger Nehemiah Onchiri squandered a golden chance from close range, blasting over the bar from just six yards out. The teams went into the break tied at 1–1.

After the restart, Mombasa United came out stronger, pushing for a winner. Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Onchiri made amends from the penalty spot after Opunde fouled striker Fidel Omondi inside the area.

Fortune Sacco piled on late pressure in search of an equaliser, but United’s defence stood firm to hand the visitors their second defeat of the season.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after the match, Mombasa United head coach Gilbert Selebwa hailed his team’s fighting spirit.

“We just took our chances. Fortune dominated for long periods, but I’m happy we’re developing a winning mentality. There’s still work to do, especially in attack, but this result is encouraging,” Selebwa said.

Fortune Sacco head coach Shem Ondiek admitted his side’s errors proved costly but remained confident about their campaign.

“We made some mistakes and got punished, but the season is still young. I’m confident we’ll bounce back and return to winning ways,” he said.
