Kenya has officially opened registration for the 2025 World AIDS Day (WAD) Half Marathon, a national event aimed at galvanizing public commitment toward ending AIDS-related deaths and reducing new infections by 2030.

Speaking on Saturday during the official launch of the registration drive, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, underscored the marathon’s significance in sustaining momentum toward the country’s HIV response.

The race will take place in Nairobi on 30th November 2025, ahead of World AIDS Day commemorations on December 1.

Held under the theme “One Race; One Goal,” the marathon seeks to spotlight persistent challenges in Kenya’s HIV landscape—particularly rising infections among young people aged 15 to 24, low adherence levels among some populations, and the growing intersection between HIV vulnerability, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence.

“This event is momentous in the continued work to end AIDS-related death by 2030,” Dr. Oluga said. “It provides an opportunity to remind the country of the need to reduce new infections, intensify adherence and viral suppression, and address socially aggravating issues that put young people at risk.”

Dr. Oluga further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to care for people living with HIV, including the sustained availability of life-saving antiretroviral medicines.

“We assure communities of persons living positively of continued access to services and provision of medicines,” he said.

The Ministry of Health is urging Kenyans from all walks of life to participate in the marathon, both to support HIV awareness and to foster national solidarity with affected communities.

Registration is now open at wad.nsdcc.go.ke.
