In a strongly worded statement, the Somali club condemned the actions of the fans, calling them unacceptable and contrary to the values of football.
“During the CAF Champions League first-leg match between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC, an unfortunate incident occurred in which a few young fans were seen kicking the Kenyan national flag.
"On behalf of the Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the government and people of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents," the club said.
The statement further emphasised the need for mutual respect, urging fans to uphold values of unity and peace.
“We fully support any appropriate action by the Kenyan authorities against those involved, and we urge our fans, especially the younger generation, to always respect all nations, their flags, and their people.
"Football is a game of unity, love, and mutual respect, and we call on all supporters to uphold these values and promote peace and harmony in our communities,” the club added.
The apology followed public outrage in Kenya after footage circulated online showing fans laying the Kenyan flag on the ground and stepping on it .
While the Constitution of Kenya 2010 recognises the flag as a national symbol, the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap. 99) explicitly protects it from insult or abuse, with offenders liable to a fine of up to Sh5,000, six months in prison, or both.
The controversy overshadowed what had been an entertaining football match. Kenya Police FC secured a commanding 3-1 win through goals from Eric Zakayo, Edward Omondi, and David Simiyu, giving them a vital advantage heading into the return leg.
With the spotlight now firmly on both the pitch and the terraces, the two sides are set to meet again this Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium, where Police will seek to progress to the next round as Mogadishu City Club seeks redemption both on and off the field.
