A young girl from Migori county is nursing serious injuries after a rogue baboon attacked her at home in Sumba village, Nyatike Constituency.

Nyabomo sub-location village elder Salim Nyochol told Wananchi Reporting that the girl was at home attending to duties when she was savagely attacked.

“The baboon attacked the girl as she was eating, injuring both her shoulders,” said Nyochol.

The village elder noted that the baboons were slowly becoming a menace in the village, harassing people and especially women and children.

Nyochol blamed the situation on the recent drought.

“The primates often invade homes looking for food, grabbing and eating chicken and goats from homes and on the grazing grounds,” he said.

The injured girl was taken to Kisii hospital for treatment, and had to be admitted.

“She has since returned home and is recuperating, and she is traumatised,” said Nyochol.

Residents of Sumba village along the shores of Lake Victoria are concerned that baboons and hippos are becoming increasingly aggressive .

Many parents are worried for the safety of their children, with schools now set to reopen as the new term begins.
