The Movement Defence for Democracy (MDD) has issued a strong condemnation of remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, describing them as “irresponsible, reckless, insensitive, and provocative,” coming at a time when the nation is mourning the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In its statement, MDD Chairperson Victor Marende accused Governor Kahiga of making statements that demean the Odinga family, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and the Luo community at large.

Marende said such remarks were a direct provocation and an affront to the memory of a leader who “dedicated his life to democracy, justice, and national unity.”

The MDD boss further stated that any attempt to distort, tarnish, or downplay Raila Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s political history would be met with firm resistance.

“As we strive to uphold unity, peace, and liberty, we must remember that Raila Odinga left behind a generation of men and women who are brave, vigilant, and fully committed to safeguarding his legacy. We will not allow reckless statements to undo decades of sacrifice and patriotism,” Marende said.

On the same note, a section of youth leaders from the Luo Council of Elders has also condemned Governor Kahiga’s remarks. Led by Peter Otiang’a, the group said Kahiga's statements were not only disrespectful but also a threat to national cohesion.

“It is deeply unfortunate that Governor Kahiga, a beneficiary of devolution—an achievement Raila Odinga relentlessly fought for—would choose to dishonor his legacy in such a manner,” Otiang’a remarked.

The youth leaders called on political figures to exercise wisdom and sensitivity, especially during moments of national mourning. They urged leaders to promote unity, dignity, and accountability in their public communications.

Both MDD and the youths from the Luo Council of Elders emphasized the need for responsible leadership and cautioned against utterances that could inflame tensions or undermine the peace of the nation.

They reiterated that honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy means defending democracy, embracing unity, and upholding respect across all communities.
