Mazingira Day celebrations in Machakos County took a practical turn as St. Bakhita School and the Sabaki Residence Association launched an ambitious community project aimed at paving four kilometers of roads in the Sabaki area.
Dubbed ‘Adopt a Bale of Cabro – Paving the Way to a Cleaner
Future,’ the initiative seeks to raise over Ksh.15 million to improve roads
that have long been muddy and impassable during rains and extremely dusty
during dry seasons.
Residents say the poor road conditions have hampered movement,
disrupted learning, and increased cases of respiratory infections in the area.
The Mazingira Day event featured a community walk and
environmental awareness activities led by Sabaki Residence Association Chairman
Nyambane, comedian Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki, and St. Bakhita School Managing
Director Madam Felista Mutinda. The leaders called for stronger community
partnerships to drive sustainable development.
“Education goes beyond the classroom. By involving our
learners in real community challenges like this, we nurture responsible
citizens who will lead Kenya’s future sustainably” said Madam Mutinda
To complement the infrastructure drive, Grade 9 learners from
St. Bakhita, the pioneer class under the Competency-Based Education (CBE)
curriculum, planted over 300 fruit tree seedlings across Sabaki. The exercise
aimed to promote environmental stewardship among the young learners.
The project marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration
between St. Bakhita School and the Sabaki community to improve infrastructure,
enhance environmental conservation, and create a cleaner, healthier, and
learner-friendly neighborhood.
