Mathare United CEO Obure eyes major revival after relegation escape

Mathare United CEO Jecton Obure has laid out an ambitious strategy to restore the club's lost glory, insisting that the 'Slum Boys' are eyeing a strong return to competitive dominance in the upcoming FKF Premier League 2026-27 season.

The 2008 league champions had a struggling campaign near the bottom of the log, barely avoiding relegation on the final day of the season.

Speaking during pre-season preparations, Obure emphasized that surviving the relegation axe was only the first phase of a broader rebuilding process.

“Staying in the premier league was critical for the club, but that chapter is behind us now. Mathare United has a rich history, an identity and a deep connection with our community,” stated Obure.

“Our focus now is to bring everyone together, fix key operational and technical areas and build a competitive team that doesn't just survive, but actively contends at the top end of the log.”

Mathare United's campaign was marked by high pressure, finishing the season at position 14 managing to collect only 41 points just one point ahead of Posta Rangers.

The club successfully steered its way to safety in the closing weeks but the executive leadership is keen to ensure last season's nerve-wracking finish is not repeated.

The chief executive noted that backing the technical bench, retaining core talent and making strategic signings during the transfer window remain high priorities ahead of the new season opener.

“We have done some good recruitment on several players and we are currently conducting our camping in Kericho, the team looks stronger and better than the way it looked like last season,” added Obure.

Having already secured David Ouma’s signature as their new head coach, Obure has expressed his faith on the tactician confirming that the club puts full trust on him.

“With the new coach on board, we are confident of a better performance next season so our fans should not panic but be ready for a surprise comeback.”

The club parted ways with their former coach John Kamau following unimpressive season which led to the 14th place finish.

With the technical bench issues already settled, the club now shifts focus to chasing back their glory in the league as they target either continental football or a top five finish come next season.

“We have quite a good number of changes and we target the bigger stages like the continental football, we have given the coach all that is needed and so if we make it to the top position well and if not, at least make it to the top five.”
