A Kibera court has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of defiling a 15-year-old girl.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Murage, the accused
was convicted of the offence after the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt by presenting six witnesses.
The court heard that he committed the heinous act while the
mother of the minor was away doing casual jobs.
“This conviction, at the Kibera High Court, followed a
well-coordinated prosecution led by Michael Mutune, who presented six
compelling witnesses detailing how the accused took advantage of the minor
while her mother was away doing casual jobs,” stated the Office of the Director
of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Principal Magistrate Murage, in her ruling, highlighted the
grave nature of the offence, the young age of the victim, and the predatory
circumstances under which the crime occurred.
She also underscored that the accused, who was out on bond,
absconded mid-trial in February 2024 before being re-arrested, causing delays
in the case.
The accused was slapped with 20 years in prison, with the
court emphasising that the punishment would serve as a strong deterrent to
those who prey on children.
