Lewis Kazungu Charo was accused of murdering 17-year-old Faridah Changawa Julius, a mother of an 11-month-old child. Court documents indicated that Charo defiled the minor at 15 years old and was convicted at Shanzu Law Courts.
Later, the accused began a romantic relationship with the minor, leading to her untimely death.
The prosecution team revealed that on the fateful day, Charo slit the victim's throat with a knife and stabbed her on the cheeks.
Following plea negotiations, the murder charge was reduced to manslaughter under a plea agreement and was handed a 20-year jail term.
IJM highlighted concerns in cases involving violence against women and children, noting that the case took 11 months to be determined.
"While this sentence is a step toward justice, it cannot restore the life lost. IJM stood with Farida in her pursuit of protection and justice and her case underscores the urgent need to strengthen survivor protection at every stage," stated Aggrey Juma, Manager, Violence Against Women and Children, IJM Kenya.
Despite the ruling, IJM noted that accountability measures are needed to ensure the long-lasting protection of women and children.
