The 3,000-seater facility will be constructed at Kakuswi Playground in Kiteta Kisau Ward and is poised to feature a football pitch, volleyball and basketball courts, and a minimum six-lane running track.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior hosted a delegation from the Trust, led by Chief Executive Officer Rahul Parekh, for a review of the complex designs and the signing of a memorandum of understanding for its development and maintenance.
“In consultation with county government, we will conduct talent scouting programs within within the county as a whole to identify promising athletes across diverse sports disciplines and develop tailored training programs to nurture local talent and provide opportunities for progression to national and international levels,” read part of MoU between Makueni County Government and the Trust.
“We will provide athletes with life skills training leading to possible academic opportunities alongside sports training and emphasize character building, discipline, and leadership as core values in all programs.”
As part of the agreement, the Trust will provide Ksh 500,000 annually for maintenance for the first three years, and Ksh 300,000 thereafter.
An existing borehole, which yields 60,000 litres of water per hour, will supply water to the complex and the surrounding community, with the Trust supporting the distribution infrastructure.
Kiteta Kisau Ward is home to 2024 London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso, who honed his craft in the remote area, and the partnership to construct the modern facility will act as a catalyst to unearth more world beaters in different disciplines.
Governor Mutula, who was accompanied by Sports CEC Eng. Sebastian Kyoni and Sports Director Ambrose Kisoi, termed the partnership a major milestone in sports development in Makueni—one of his key development pillars.
“Makueni will become a home of sports. We’re very keen to ensure the sector benefits our talented youths,” said the county boss.
