Leadership wrangles surface at ODM Kakamega delegates meeting

The tensions were heightened after a faction allied to the G8 grouping, led by former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, convened a parallel meeting in Butere.

The Butere gathering was attended by Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, MPs Nabii Nabwera and several other legislators, who conspicuously skipped the official delegates’ meeting in Kakamega.

ODM party leader Oburu Odinga first attended the Butere meeting before later making his way to the Kakamega delegates’ forum, a move that appeared to underscore the underlying divisions within the party’s county leadership.

The Kakamega meeting drew a number of senior ODM figures, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, alongside several governors and members of parliament.

During the deliberations, delegates called for the full implementation of the party’s 10-point agenda, while the ODM Central Committee also reiterated its demands in the context of ongoing negotiations between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

At the same time, party members opposed to the proposed coalition arrangements came under scrutiny, with their stance on the talks drawing criticism from sections of the leadership who urged unity and discipline as negotiations continue.
