According to Patrick Waweru, the chairman of the Kutus Boda Boda Operators Association, more than 10 motorcycles have been stolen in the past two months. He says several cases have been reported at local police stations, yet no arrests have been made.
Waweru led more than 1,000 riders in protests on Saturday, bringing business in Kutus town to a standstill for nearly two hours. He said thieves are now striking in broad daylight.
“Motorcycles are being stolen even at midday. One was taken from the livestock market at around 12 noon, and another from Ngomongo village at the same time. We want the police to act. Over 10 cases have been reported across the two police stations in the town,” Waweru said.
The aggrieved riders demanded that police dismantle what they suspect is a well-organized theft syndicate. Kutus town, which lies at the intersection of Kirinyaga Central, Mwea, and Gichugu constituencies, hosts more than 1,000 boda boda operators.
“We decided to stage protests because of persistent motorcycle thefts and the deep frustrations caused by weak law enforcement,” said rider Leonard Mugo.
Kirinyaga Police Commander Nelson Taliti rushed to Kutus and held a meeting with the riders. He urged them to support police efforts by sharing information that could help identify and arrest the culprits.
“We want you to collaborate with law enforcement by being vigilant and sharing any useful information,” Taliti said.
He added that officers from Mwea and Gichugu sub-counties will work jointly to address the issue, noting that an enhanced security operation has already been launched ahead of the Christmas season.
“Our goal is to ensure residents enjoy a peaceful and crime-free Christmas,” the commander said.
