Women in Technology & Innovation Africa (WITIA), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Karen, has launched a Ksh 4.7 million Smart Library at Nkaimurunya Comprehensive School in Gataka, Kajiado County.

The project aims to bring cutting-edge learning technology to one of the most underserved public schools in the region.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba lauded the initiative for advancing equitable education.

“This Smart Library is a tangible expression of Kenya’s commitment to inclusive, technology-driven learning. The Ministry of Education fully supports community-led partnerships that actualize the Competency-Based Curriculum and ensure no child is left behind in the digital era,” said CS Ogamba.

The Smart Library is a pilot initiative under WITIA’s flagship program, “Smart Libraries for a Smart Nation,” which seeks to empower learners through digital access, innovation, and inclusive education.

Equipped with modern computers, internet connectivity, and e-learning platforms, the Smart Library provides both teachers and students with access to global educational resources, fostering research, creativity, and technological fluency.

ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui said the program aligns with the national digital transformation agenda.

“The future of education is digital. What WITIA has done here is a model for the country, a demonstration of how innovation, partnership, and purpose can transform public education. The Ministry of ICT is proud to support initiatives that bring technology closer to our communities,” said Tanui.

Community Voices and Impact Hon. James Maina, MCA for Nkaimurunya Ward, hailed the launch as a historic first: “This is the first Smart Library in Kajiado North and possibly the first in the country. It shows that even schools in informal settlements can lead to innovation when partners unite for a shared purpose.”

The Headteacher of Nkaimurunya Comprehensive School expressed gratitude for the project, saying the Smart Library will completely transform our learners’ experience.

During the event, WITIA signed an MoU with the Rotary Club of Karen, to strengthen collaboration on education, digital literacy, and community empowerment projects.

It also reached an agreement with UNICAF to provide scholarships to WITIA members and affiliates pursuing higher education in technology, leadership, and innovation.

Ms. Eunice Pohlmann, the Founder and Chairperson of WITIA, reaffirmed her organization’s long-term commitment to digital inclusion.

“The Smart Library is more than a room with computers - it’s a gateway to equal opportunity. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves the digital tools that define the future. This pilot project will be scaled to other underserved schools across Kenya,” said Pohlman.
