The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has donated essential items to the Nairobi Children Rescue Centre to improve the welfare and living conditions of vulnerable children at the facility.

The donation, made under KPA’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, is aimed at meeting some of the daily needs of children receiving care and protection at the centre.

Speaking on behalf of KPA Chief Executive Officer, the authority’s Manager for Corporate Communication, Jones Buchere, said supporting vulnerable groups was part of the institution’s responsibility to contribute to national development.

Buchere said the centre was selected following an assessment of its needs, adding that the donation was intended to enhance the children’s comfort and living conditions.

“Giving every child an equal chance is an investment in the future of our nation,” he said.

He said KPA remained committed to initiatives that address the needs of disadvantaged members of society, noting that the authority had supported more than 60 infrastructure projects across the country since 2000.

The projects include the construction and improvement of dispensaries, laboratories, libraries, dormitories and rescue centres.

Among the institutions that have previously benefited from the programme are Machakos Girls Rescue Centre, Jawabu Rehabilitation Centre and Kisii Special School for the Deaf.

Buchere said KPA’s social investment initiatives were guided by its core value of care and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. He also commended caregivers at the Nairobi Children Rescue Centre for providing a supportive environment for the children.

The centre’s head, Margaret Kagwiria, welcomed the donation, saying it would help improve the welfare and comfort of children under the facility’s care.

Kagwiria called on other corporate organisations to support rescue centres, noting that partnerships between public institutions and private entities could help address the needs of vulnerable children.

The donation highlights the role of corporate social investment programmes in complementing government efforts to provide social protection and improve the welfare of disadvantaged groups.

Meanwhile, KPA is scheduled to hold a corporate golf tournament at VetLab Sports Club in Nairobi on October 16, bringing together customers, stakeholders and government agencies to strengthen partnerships and promote engagement across different sectors.
