Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball team have beefed up their squad ahead of the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) Zone Five qualifiers to be held in Nairobi.

The reigning women’s national league champions have strengthened their roster with four new signings as they seek to punch a ticket reserved for Zone Five region for the continental championship.

The new recruits include Ly Aminatta from Senegal (Centre), Okoro Ifunanya from Nigeria (Guard), Betty Kananu from Equity Hawks (Shooting Guard), and Mercy Wanyama (Forward).

The quartet is expected to play a crucial role as the Dockers intensify their preparations for the regional championship, scheduled for November 9 to 15t at the Nyayo Gymnasium in Nairobi.

KPA assistant head coach Samuel Ocholla explained the rationale behind the new signings, noting that experience was a key factor in strengthening the squad ahead of the championship.

“All four players boast international and national team experience, having represented their respective countries at top levels,” Ocholla said.

“Their wealth of experience is expected to bring depth and balance to the Dockers’ lineup as we look to make a strong statement in the regional qualifiers.”

KPA will represent Kenya alongside Zetech Sparks, last season’s Premier League runners-up. KPA finished fourth last year as compatriots Equity Hawks finished sixth.

The other teams are REG and APR from Rwanda, Gladiators and Hippos from Burundi, Fox Divers from Tanzania and Magic Stormers from Uganda.

The qualifiers are expected to feature top club sides from across the East and Central Africa region, all vying for a place in the prestigious WBLA continental showpiece.

As the national champions prepare for the qualifiers, all eyes are on what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament, showcasing the talent, determination and development of women’s basketball across the continent.

Qualifying for the Final Round through these qualifiers is not only prestigious, but also paves the way for a chance to win the continental title, currently held by Ferroviário de Maputo of Mozambique.
