National Women’s Basketball League champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) saw their perfect run come to an end after falling 71–81 to Rwanda’s APR in their final Pool A match at the FIBA Zone Five Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) 2025 Qualifiers at Nyayo Gymnasium, Nairobi on Thursday.
The Dockers, who had won their first three games, led in the first half but lost control late in the third quarter before struggling to contain APR’s resilience in the final period.
KPA started strongly, taking the first quarter 24–17 and tightening their grip with a 20–16 win in the second quarter to head into halftime leading 44–33.
After the break, the Rwandan giants came out more organized and aggressive, outscoring the hosts 21–10 in the third quarter before sealing victory with a 27–17 dominance in the final period to close out the game 81–71 at the buzzer.
APR’s trio of Italee Lucas, Destiney Promise Philoxy, and Kamba Yoro Diakite were ruthless against the home side, combining for 63 points, while teammates Yacine Diop, Assouma Uwizeye, and A’Lexxus Faith Davis shared the remaining 18 points.
For KPA, foreign-based stars Alima Doumbia and Ifunanya Okoro combined for 44 points, but their efforts were not enough to steer the Dockers to victory.
The loss saw KPA finish second in Pool A with seven points—three wins, one loss—while APR topped the group unbeaten with eight points.
KPA will now face another Rwandan side, REG, who topped Pool B, in the semifinals on Friday, while APR will clash with Les Hippos of Burundi, Pool B runners-up.
Elsewhere, Zetech Sparks wrapped up their group stage campaign on a positive note with an emphatic 84–62 victory over Don Bosco of Tanzania at the Nyayo Gymnasium.
The win saw the students finish third in Pool B with four points after registering one win and two losses in their three matches.
Zetech dominated the first three quarters, taking the opening quarter 23–10 before extending their lead with a 15–12 win in the second.
After the halftime break, they continued their fine form with a 19–12 victory in the third quarter, though Don Bosco fought back to narrowly edge the last quarter 28–27.
Mary Lisa Omondi led from the front with a game-high 22 points, while Angel Oduor, Christine Akinyi, and Roseline Akinyi combined for 36 points to seal the win.
Earlier, Zetech had fallen 61–75 to Les Hippos of Burundi and 44–86 to Rwanda’s REG in their opening two fixtures.
REG topped Pool B with six points after winning all their three matches, followed by Les Hippos with five points from two wins and one loss.
As a result of their third-place finish, debutants Zetech Sparks will face Foxes of Tanzania in the fifth–sixth place classification match on Saturday.
Don Bosco, who finished fourth, will take on Gladiators of Burundi also fourth in Pool A in the seventh–eighth place playoff Friday.
