Police in Muhoroni, Kisumu County, are pursuing a gang of
eight people who carjacked a public service vehicle they hired while posing as mourners
from Sunday’s burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The five men and three women had hired the matatu from Bondo
and requested to be ferried to Kericho.
According to a police report, they negotiated with the
driver, who agreed to charge them Ksh. 8,000 for the trip.
Police say the vehicle left Bondo at 8 p.m. and later made a
stop-over at Ahero as the suspects requested to have a water break.
However, when they got to the Awasi area at around 10 p.m.,
one of the ladies hit the driver's head with a blunt object, and they took
control of the vehicle.
Police say the driver, Francis Ochieng Oduor, was also
drugged using an unknown substance and dumped along the Awasi-Chemelil Road.
The gang then escaped with the vehicle, a Nissan Hiace of
registration number KCT 176R.
They also stole a mobile phone and a total of Ksh.16,000, alongside
other personal belongings, from the driver.
