Residents of Njoga and Karia-ini villages in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County, have come together to construct a makeshift bridge to connect their two communities after years of being cut off due to a lack of proper infrastructure.

The villagers accuse elected leaders in the county of neglecting their plight for over eight years despite numerous appeals for a permanent bridge across River Rwamuthambi.

According to resident Cecilia Wanjohi, the community decided to take matters into their own hands after persistent promises from leaders went unfulfilled.

“We have suffered for years trying to cross this river. During the rainy season, it becomes impassable, forcing us to walk several kilometres just to access markets and coffee factories,” Wanjohi said.

She added that the residents contributed money to buy logs, timber, nails, and sacks to build the temporary bridge, saying it was the only way to ease transport challenges in the area.

Another resident, Jecinta Wakiine, said the situation has also made it costly for villagers to access essential services such as hospitals and local markets.

“We have incurred a lot of expenses because of this poor access. It’s unacceptable that our leaders have ignored this issue for so long,” she said.

The residents have now issued a two-week ultimatum to their leaders, demanding a clear plan for the construction of a permanent bridge.

“We are tired of empty promises. We want action, not words,” one resident said during the community’s meeting at the riverbank.

The residents are urging the Kirinyaga County Government and local MPs to prioritize the bridge project to ensure the safety and well-being of the communities living on both sides of River Rwamuthambi.
