Speaking in Mwea, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Hallosow said the rising cases of livestock theft can only be contained if residents work closely with security agencies and local administrators.
Hallosow warned residents against lynching suspects, saying mob justice denies investigators crucial information that could help dismantle theft networks.
“If suspects are arrested and taken to police stations, they can be interrogated to reveal where the stolen cows are taken and who they are working with. They could be colluding with people outside the county or with butchers. Once they are killed, valuable evidence is lost,” Hallosow said.
Residents say livestock theft cases are now being reported almost daily, with some animals reportedly slaughtered near their owners’ homes.
“Sometimes we wonder whether they spray us with something because the thefts happen without anyone noticing,” said Joseph Kariuki, a resident of Kiaga village.
Other residents accused the suspects of using proceeds from stolen livestock to fund lavish lifestyles.
“They steal our cows and use the money on alcohol and women,” said Peter Mutai from Ngurubani.
Residents also claimed the suspects use Probox vehicles to transport stolen livestock and called on police to intensify night patrols.
“We suspect some butchers from within and outside the county could be involved. Something must be done,” said Joseph Wanjohi in Makutano.
Hallosow said security agencies are now on high alert and vowed firm action against those involved in livestock theft.
