The County Government of Kilifi has
launched a year-long reading initiative aimed at inspiring children and
families across the county to read daily and build lifelong literacy habits.
The Mashujaa Wa Kusoma Challenge, launched
in collaboration with BookSmart powered by Worldreader, was officially unveiled
by Kilifi Deputy Governor Flora Chibule on behalf of Governor Gideon Mung’aro
during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Dindiri Primary School Grounds.
Running from October 20, 2025, to October
20, 2026, the challenge will culminate in the crowning of Reading Champions
during next year’s Mashujaa Day festivities. The recognition will celebrate
children who demonstrate exceptional dedication, curiosity, and a passion for
reading.
Through the initiative, children will gain
free access to over 2,700 culturally relevant storybooks in English and
Kiswahili, tailored for ages 0 to 12. Families are encouraged to dedicate at
least ten minutes each day to reading together—an effort expected to improve
language skills, boost imagination, and strengthen family bonds.
“As Kilifi, we want to raise a generation
of readers who will not only excel in school but also in life,” said Governor
Mung’aro. “Reading is the key to opportunity, confidence, and success. By
launching the Mashujaa Wa Kusoma Challenge, we are empowering our children with
the gift of stories and preparing them for a brighter future.”
Worldreader’s Director of Partnerships,
Olivia Kimani, emphasised the program’s inclusive and motivating approach.
“Every child deserves a fair chance to read, learn, and thrive. The Mashujaa Wa
Kusoma Challenge combines fun, competition, and learning to motivate children
to read more. Through BookSmart, families can easily access thousands of
stories that spark curiosity, build skills, and strengthen parent-child
connections,” she said.
Throughout the year, the program will
feature digital leaderboards highlighting top readers, community engagement
activities, and social media campaigns to keep families motivated. Recognition
will also be given across different age categories, ensuring inclusivity for
both early learners and older readers.
“When families read together, children
thrive,” added Kimani. “Through this partnership with the County Government of
Kilifi, we’re making reading accessible, joyful, and part of everyday life. A
reading Kilifi is a powerful Kilifi.”
