Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero’s driver, George
Oduor, has been fined Ksh.100,000 after pleading guilty to charges of dangerous
overtaking and obstructing other road users.
Oduor appeared before the Milimani Traffic Court following a
viral video that captured him blocking motorists along a city road.
The court was told that on October 9, along Oloitoktok Road
within Nairobi, he dangerously overtook a line of vehicles, obstructing the
flow of traffic.
When the charges were read to him, he admitted to the
offence and pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he was rushing to the
airport at the time of the incident.
“I am sorry, Your Honour. I was in a hurry to drop someone
at the airport and I will not repeat the offence,” he said in mitigation.
In her ruling, the magistrate said she had considered the
driver’s plea and remorse but noted that the law provides for a fine of up to Ksh.100,000
for such an offence.
“I have considered your mitigation, but the law provides a
fine of Ksh.100,000. I will therefore impose the maximum penalty,” ruled the
magistrate.
