Young people in Kiambu County are being urged to tap into the opportunities offered by the government’s expanding Jitume ICT hubs, which aim to equip learners with the digital competencies required in an increasingly technology-driven job market.
Speaking during a graduation ceremony for 54 trainees at the Ndumberi Jitume hub, Kiambu Township MP Machua Waithaka underscored the urgency of embracing digital skills as global labour trends shift.
The three-month programme exposed learners to a diverse range of fields, including web and graphic design, data entry, data analysis, forex trading, and digital marketing.
Waithaka said remote work continues to unlock new economic prospects, particularly through international firms that are reshaping online employment. He noted that additional, fully equipped Jitume hubs will soon be launched in Ting’ang’a, Riabai and Kihingo to ensure more young people can benefit from the initiative.
For many graduates, the training has already proven transformative. Julius Mwangi, who completed the course after missing out on university admission despite earning a B- grade, said the programme has renewed his confidence in pursuing digital job opportunities.
Others have transitioned directly into global assignments. Data analyst Betty Gikundi revealed that several graduates are currently undertaking projects for a multinational company and hope to convert the experience into full-time roles.
Graphic design graduate Samuel Ngatia encouraged more youth to enrol in the free, government-sponsored courses, arguing that they offer more sustainable prospects than informal or unstable jobs such as motorcycle taxi operations.
