Kenyan middle-distance sensation Gladys Chepngetich heads into the 2026 NCAA Division I Indoor Championships set for March 13–14, 2026 in Fayetteville, Arkansas as the clear favourite in the women’s 800 meters after producing one of the most remarkable collegiate seasons in recent history.

The Clemson University junior stunned the athletics world in January when she clocked 1:58.81 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston. The time not only broke the long-standing Kenyan indoor record of 1:58.83 set by Pamela Jelimo 13 years ago, but also became the second-fastest indoor 800m time in NCAA history, trailing only Olympic champion Athing Mu.

Chepngetich’s performance instantly positioned her as the fastest 800m runner in the NCAA this season and cemented her reputation as one of the most dominant middle-distance athletes on the collegiate circuit.

Her 2026 indoor campaign has been nothing short of electric. Alongside the national record, she has recorded impressive marks across multiple events, including 1:26.66 in the 600 meters and a 10:49.27 Distance Medley Relay, both of which are school records at Clemson. Her consistency and dominance have also earned her several ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week honors.

Born on May 20, 2001, in Kapsokio village in Nandi County, Chepngetich’s journey to the top of collegiate athletics began in Kenya. The youngest of eight siblings, she first developed her talent at Kosirai Girls High School before sharpening her skills at the Janeth Jepkosgei Athletics Camp and later the Townhall Athletics Camp in Iten, a globally renowned training hub for distance runners.

Since arriving in the United States, Chepngetich has rapidly rewritten the record books. In her debut 2023–24 season, she achieved a rare feat in the Atlantic Coast Conference by sweeping freshman of the year honours in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, becoming only the second woman in conference history to accomplish the triple.

She is also a two-time ACC Outdoor 800m champion, winning titles in 2024 and 2025 and setting a meet record of 1:59.94 last season.

Internationally, Chepngetich represented Kenya at the 2025 World University Games in Bochum, Germany, where she reached the 800m semi-finals.

With a national record, multiple school records, and a season-leading time, Chepngetich now arrives at the NCAA Indoor Championships carrying both expectation and momentum. If her recent performances are any indication, the Kenyan star could be on the verge of adding an NCAA title to her rapidly growing list of achievements.
