Agricultural stakeholders throughout Kenya are advocating for widespread adoption of organic farming practices in a concerted effort to combat rising food insecurity.

The initiative seeks to strengthen the nation’s food systems while promoting environmental sustainability and improving public health outcomes.

Experts underscore the multiple benefits of organic farming, including enhanced soil fertility, improved water conservation, and the preservation of biodiversity.

Unlike conventional agriculture, which depends heavily on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, organic methods foster healthier food production and ensure safer working environments for farmers.

Clement Rurinja, a leading advocate for sustainable agriculture, highlighted the economic potential of organic farming. He noted that farmers who embrace organic methods can tap into premium markets and secure higher prices for their produce.

“Adopting sustainable agricultural practices not only strengthens our capacity to withstand the impacts of climate change but also protects farmers and consumers from harmful chemicals,” Rurinja said.

He made the remarks during a training session at Jofad Montessori School, where students are being introduced to the fundamentals of organic agriculture.

Rurinja urged educational institutions across the country to integrate organic farming into their curricula, saying such initiatives are vital to shaping future generations capable of sustaining Kenya’s food systems.

Jofad Montessori School is already at the forefront of this movement.

According to the school’s director, Janet Ichumbi, students are gaining hands-on agricultural experience — from land preparation and planting to irrigation — to cultivate self-reliance and a deeper understanding of sustainable food production.

“Our goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals who not only value the environment but also contribute meaningfully to the future of Kenya’s agriculture,” Ichumbi said.
