The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional integration by enhancing border security and boosting trade within the East African Community, as Kenya continues to lead the bloc in intra-EAC exports.

Speaking during a media engagement forum in Nairobi, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development, Dr. Caroline Karugu, said the government is prioritising secure and efficient borders to facilitate trade and attract investment across the region, particularly as the country heads into an electioneering period.

Dr. Karugu said Kenya currently accounts for about 35 percent of total intra-EAC exports, making it the bloc's leading exporter, a performance she attributed largely to the country's strong manufacturing base.

She noted that as Kenya works to stay competitive against rival trade routes, including the Central Corridor, securing the country's borders remains essential. The government, she said, is working closely with partner states to remove trade barriers and deepen regional cooperation.

The forum also underscored the role of deeper integration in expanding market access for Kenyan goods, attracting investment and supporting economic growth. Officials said improved infrastructure, efficient border management and stronger collaboration among EAC member states would be critical to achieving those goals.

The renewed focus comes as the East African Community pushes for greater economic integration through the free movement of goods, services and people, positioning the region as a more competitive and attractive investment destination.

It also follows remarks by President William Ruto on the importance of a unified African market during a recent summit of EAC Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania.

Kenya says it will maintain close engagement with partner states to strengthen economic cooperation, enhance border security and cement its position as a leading trade and investment hub. The commitment is expected to lift investor confidence while opening new opportunities for Kenyan businesses seeking to expand into regional markets.
