Kenya and Malaysia reach duty-free export deal for agricultural products

Among the deals reached is the removal of tariffs for agricultural products exported to Malaysia.
In his welcoming speech to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Ruto said the agreement is a significant step to open new market opportunities for Kenyan farmers and strengthen the commercial foundation of the Kenya-Malaysia partnership.
"The removal of these tariffs is especially significant given the structure of our current trade, where Kenya’s main exports to Malaysia include tea, coffee, flowers, avocados, and titanium ores, while imports from Malaysia consist primarily of edible oils and fats, chemical products, electronics, agricultural chemicals, and rubber," he said.
During the bilateral talks, Kenya and Malaysia also agreed to collaborate latter’s key priorities, which are Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), research, and education as part of Kenya’s human capital development.
"Through a strategic partnership, Malaysia will support Kenya to grow and expand its semiconductor technology and manufacturing capabilities, including the experience that we have in Kimathi University," the President stated.
The Head of State commended the training opportunities for engineers and high-level professionals aimed at supporting industrialization.
"We are walking in the footsteps of Malaysia, and we hope to catch up with you soon."
He stated that the housing program inspiration came from Singapore and Malaysia and promised to take some people from the private sector to Malaysia for them to explore what the Southeast Asian countries have done in the housing programme, healthcare advancements, and modern infrastructure.
Malaysian PM Anwar lauded Ruto for his passion to provide homes for Kenyans, noting that he doesn’t think that many countries have been as fast and effective on such projects.
Ibrahim called upon Kenya and Malaysia to emerge as a forceful voice, beginning with the management of the duo in the economies’ governance.
“I believe that Kenya will be one of the great stars in Africa,” the PM stated.
