Speaking while addressing Journalists at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Kalonzo stated that he was yet to come to terms with the demise of his long-time political ally and that the reality of Raila's death was yet to fully sink in his mind.
Kalonzo, who is expected to join Kenyans and mourners in the State Funeral set for Nyayo Stadium, was received by WPF leaders led by Governors Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos, Mutula Kilonzo Jnr of Makueni, Senate Deputy Minority Leader and Kitui Senator Enock Kiio Wambua and Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo among other leaders.
The WPF leader had been scheduled to begin a 10-day official visit to the UK from Wednesday in a bid to strengthen partnerships with the Kenyans in diaspora.
Kalonzo was set to address the London Political Summit and Awards at the UK Parliament, deliver a lecture at Oxford University, and hold discussions at Chatham House and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Kalonzo and Raila have had a complex but significant political relationship over the years, marked by both rivalry and alliance. In 2007, the duo parted ways, prompting Raila to lead the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Kalonzo to head the ODM-Kenya. The election was, however, won by former President Mwai Kibaki.
In 2013, Kalonzo became Raila's running mate under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) alliance and teamed up again in 2017 under the National Super Alliance (NASA). Both elections ended in disputed losses to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In the 2022 elections, Kalonzo initially showed signs of running independently but eventually supported Raila under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
