Whenever Kabras RFC and Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) clash, it is always a fierce local battle known as the Lurambi Derby. On Saturday, November 22, 2025, Kabras RFC launched their 2025/26 Kenya Cup campaign in style, crushing MMUST 67–06 at the Kakamega Showgrounds.

Kabras opened the scoring within 10 minutes through Asuman Mugerwa, though fly-half Jone Kubu missed the conversion. Soon after, Jeanson Misoga powered over from a dominant scrum, with Kubu adding the extras.

MMUST responded with a penalty from Otiyo, narrowing the score to 12–03. But Kabras quickly extended their lead when Roy Maruti crossed the line and Kubu converted. Otiyo missed two further penalty chances, leaving MMUST struggling to stay in the contest.

The Kabras attack continued to pile on the pressure. Griffin Chao scored his first try of the match—Kabras’ fourth overall—before Kubu slotted a penalty. Otiyo managed another penalty for MMUST, setting the halftime score at 26–06.

The second half picked up where the first left off. Mugerwa struck again within 10 minutes, and Kubu extended the lead. Kabras then ran riot, with tries from Barry Young, Maruti, Chao, and a powerful scrum effort. By full-time, the scoreboard read a commanding 67–06 in favor of the sugar men.

Marlin Mukolwe, MMUST’s backs coach, told Citizen Digital: “I think it has been a good game. We’ve picked up a couple of lessons, and we’re coming out of it with fewer injuries. Remember, Kabras is a very seasoned team—they are well conditioned.”

He added: “Our weakness was in the set pieces, which are very crucial. We will work on that.”

Carlos Katywa, Kabras’ head coach, said: “Because it was a derby, it ended up being very tight. Ever since I started coaching here, we’ve decided that no matter what, we must stick to the plan. These players live in the same area, so there’s always that element of showing who is stronger and who is better.”

In other action, Kabras RFC also overwhelmed Kisumu RFC 78–03 in the Eric Shirley Shield Cup during the early kickoff.
