Matiang’i dismisses claims Uhuru is sponsoring opposition

Speaking in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County, Matiang’i said the push for political change was being driven by Kenyans and not by any individual or political sponsor.

“The President goes around every day, and whenever he opens his mouth, he insults the opposition and says we have no agenda. Ati we have a sponsor. Our sponsor is you. You are the ones who told us to seek power, and you are the ones demanding change. Our sponsors are the people of Kenya. You are the ones who want us to change this government,” Matiang’i stated.

Matiang’i was accompanied by several opposition leaders from the Gusii region, as he criticised Ruto's ongoing political activities in the Rift Valley.

He urged the President to concentrate on upholding the Constitution, ensuring government projects are delivered and addressing the concerns of Kenyans instead of engaging his political opponents.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka similarly challenged the President to focus on his responsibilities as Head of State, including protecting Kenyans and ensuring public resources are properly managed.

“Just do your thing as a Head of State. Make sure nobody is abducted, make sure Kenyans in office are not stealing our money, and make sure there is fairness and equity in development expenditure for everybody in Kenya. Make sure the projects you have promised are all going to be implemented,” Onyonka stated.

Matiang’i also expressed confidence in the opposition's ability to take over government, saying they would focus on delivering for Kenyans if elected.

“If we are declared winner, brother, we will assume power and work,” Matiang’i stated.

His remarks came as Jubilee Party suffered a setback after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal overturned the appointment of Moitalel Ole Kenta as the party's Secretary-General.

The tribunal ruled that Ole Kenta did not meet the eligibility requirements to hold the position at the time of his appointment.

Meanwhile, in Ganze, Kilifi County, People's Renaissance Movement Party leader Caleb Amisi called on opposition parties to unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Amisi said the opposition should give younger leaders an opportunity to take charge of the political contest against Ruto.

“Lakini mumesema hapo ni Sifuna, sindio? Tunataka vijana wote Kenya mzima, wakiongozwa na chama cha PM, wamesema nyinyi wazee mmekuwa sana, mmekuwa kwa uongozi sana. Si muachilie hawa vijana, wako na nguvu na akili, wapeperushe hii mpira, wachape Ruto chini mara moja,” Amisi stated.

The People's Renaissance Movement Party is expected to continue its mobilisation tour of the Coast region on Saturday.
