Joy as 27 Meru Women's GK prison inmates graduate

The graduates, who undertook their training at the Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) and Chandaria Foundation, received certificates in ICT, textiles, pastry, and entrepreneurship.
Jelidah Gakii, one of the graduates, expressed gratitude to the correctional service, KeMU, and Chandaria Foundation for the skills acquired, saying they will benefit them upon release.
"Currently I am working there, the skills are very powerful. Thank you for the knoledge, skills and experience and with that I know we will make it in life," she said.
Director General of Kenya Prisons Charles Mutembei has said their commitment as correction department is to equip inmates with market-driven skills for national development.
He praised the graduates for their dedication and urged them to inspire others.
Lucy Gacheri the officer-in-charge of Meru Women's GK Prison, highlighted the importance of education and skills training in addressing the root causes of incarceration.

KeMU Vice Chancellor Prof.John Ataya stated that the university's partnership with the prison aims to empower individuals to change and become responsible members of society.
"We started this journey of empowering people who have been branded differently to know that you can change. A university opens your view of life. It gives you options," he said.
The graduation ceremony underscores the importance of rehabilitation programs in correctional facilities.
