Jamia Mosque unveils historic photo exhibition to mark 100 years of faith and service

The exhibition, which runs from October 27 to 30 at the Jamia Mosque Multi-Purpose Hall, provides a unique visual journey through time, showcasing archival photographs that trace the mosque's evolution from its humble beginnings in the 1920s to its current status as a beacon of spiritual guidance and social progress.

The collection, which was meticulously curated from decades of preserved records, depicts Jamia's pivotal role in shaping religious education, promoting social welfare, and fostering unity among Kenya's diverse communities.

Each photograph, steeped in history, tells a story of resilience and continuity — of a community formed around one of Nairobi's most iconic landmarks.

During the launch, Secretary General AbdulBari Hamid praised the exhibition as a tribute to the visionaries and faithful who have preserved the Jamia Mosque's legacy for generations.

“This milestone is not just a reflection of Jamia’s history, but of the generations who built, preserved, and served through it. We hope this exhibition inspires future generations to uphold the mosque’s legacy of unity, service, and moral guidance,” Hamid said.

The opening ceremony drew dignitaries, scholars, and community leaders from across the country, many of whom commended Jamia Mosque’s lasting impact on Kenya’s religious and social landscape.

They praised the mosque for its ongoing efforts to promote education, peace, and national cohesion, recognising its significance not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for community empowerment.

As Jamia Mosque celebrates its centenary, the exhibition stands as a powerful testament to its enduring mission — one rooted in faith, community service, and nation-building.

For many, it serves as both a historical reflection and a call to uphold the values that have defined the mosque over the last century.

The exhibition is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily until October 30, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to experience the story of one of Kenya's most treasured religious and cultural institutions as told through the lens of time and memory.
